Ilhan Omar, Other ‘Squad’ Members Win Reelection

Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.)were among the members of the so-called Squad winning reelection on Nov. 8.

Omar, 40, had 74.3 percent of the vote with all precincts reporting while Ocasio-Cortez, 33, had 67 percent, according to unofficial results from the Minnesota and New York secretary of state offices.

Omar represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which covers Minneapolis and surrounding areas.

Republican Cicely Davis, a state director of BLEXIT-MN, the group founded by Candace Owens, challenged Omar.

“This seat is for everybody in my district, regardless of who they love, how they pray, the color of their skin, or even how they vote, and I will continue to fight for all of you,” Omar said in a statement.

Ocasio-Cortez represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, which includes portions of the New York City boroughs of the Bronx and Queens.

Small business owner Tina Forte won the Republican nomination for the seat but failed to knock off Ocasio-Cortez, who famously toppled top Democrat Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) in 2018 and has now won reelection twice.

“Thank you to every member of our community and every grassroots supporter for entrusting me with the great responsibility of representing NY-14 in Congress,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement.

Both Ocasio-Cortez and Omar are part of the so-called Squad, a group of progressive members of Congress that hold some unorthodox and sometimes radical views. The group has influenced the Democrat party, including pressuring more mainstream Democrats to shift left on issues such as the climate.

Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), Cori Bush (D-Mo.), and Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) are the other members.

All four also won reelection.

Tlaib, 46, represents Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, which covers parts of Detroit.

She beat Steven Elliott, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, according to results from The Associated Press.

Tlaib had 73.7 percent of the vote with 66 percent of precincts reporting early Wednesday.

Pressley, 48, holds the seat for Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District.

Veteran Donnie Palmer challenged Pressley, who had 84.5 percent of the vote with 95 percent of precincts reporting, according to The Associated Press.

Bush, 46, won reelection for the seat representing Missouri’s 1st Congressional District, which includes St. Louis.

Bush, a Black Lives Matter activist, beat Republican businessman Andrew Jones.

Bush had 72.8 percent of the vote with all precincts reporting, according to the Missouri secretary of state’s office.

Bush and Bowman entered office in 2021, after the other four members of the Squad.

The race for New York’s 16th Congressional District, which Bowman represents, had not been projected yet.

Bowman, 46, was facing off against Dr. Miriam Levitt Flisser.

Bowman had 57.4 percent of the vote with 624 of 703 precincts reporting as of early Wednesday, according to New York authorities.

Flisser had 36 percent while 6.4 percent of the ballots left the race blank.
